The importance of Microcirculation

Let’s first understand what micro-circulation is. Microcirculation is the circulation of the blood in the smallest blood vessels, also called blood capillaries. These are the microvessels of the microvasculature present within organ tissues. Technically, the microvessels include terminal arterioles, metarterioles, capillaries, and venules. Interestingly, microcirculation also includes lymphatic capillaries and collecting ducts. Blood capillaries connect our arteries and veins.

Microcirculation is important due to its key functions. The main functions of micro-circulation are the delivery of oxygen and nutrients and the removal of carbon dioxide (CO2) and other waste. In other words, all tissues are dependent on a healthy micro-circulation to carry blood to and from the stationary cellular components of the tissue. In addition, our microcirculation regulates blood flow and tissue perfusion, in other words, it helps to regulate blood pressure.

Just to put things in perspective, if all arteries and veins of the human circulatory system were connected end to end, the total length of our blood vessels would be 60,000 miles, enough to go around the world more than twice!
